As we strive to ensure the vehicles servicing the construction industry are equipped to do as safely as possible, there are a number of standards and checks in place to monitor the roadworthiness of a vehicle, but do tyres get the time and attention they deserve?
In our latest CLOCS Safety Forum, CLOCS Strategic Partner TyreSafe set out how it is making its Case for Action with road safety practitioners to understand the scale of the problem around illegal and unroadworthy tyres on UK roads and presented its latest research and data around the perilous state of tyres on British roads and how it is now developing effective partnerships to tackle this growing road safety issue.
Importantly, the session also covered what you can do to make sure that the journeys associated with your activities are as safe as possible.
We heard from Stuart Lovatt and Mike Bourne who shared their knowledge and expertise in this area and provided useful guidance on what you should be doing at a local level to ensure your vehicles are safe but also efficient with poor quality having a significant impact on fuel economy.
A copy of the presentation can be found here.
TyreSafe also shared a short video that looks at the issue of how all season tyres perform against summer tyres in various weather conditions.
Looking forward
Stuart and Mike highlighted the need for everyone to be taking a closer look at their own knowledge and their vehicle maintenance processes to ensure vehicles are going out with safe tyres every time. The session also highlighted some of the things that construction sites could do such as wheel washing and tyre inspections on egress, as well as ensuring entrances and exits are kept free of any materials that could damage tyres.

And finally…
Our thanks to Stuart and Mike for giving up their time to share their knowledge and insights on this subject with the CLOCS community, and thanks also those who attended sharing their own thoughts and experiences.
