Safety Forum #26 Bridge strikes, a clear and present danger

26 September 2024

In this session, we were joined by David Somers, MD of CLOCS Delivery Partner Road Skills Online, who talked to the CLOCS community about bridge strikes, a high-profile topic with the Traffic Commissioners and an issue that can affect us all.

Since Network Rail promoted the problem of Bridge Strikes to the Traffic Commissioners in 2021 the issue has been regarded significantly more seriously by the authorities.

This presentation explored the significance of the issue from compliance, cost and brand perspectives, looking at why bridge strikes happen, where they happen and who is involved.

David also talked about what you should do to prevent a bridge strike and what you would need to have in place to mitigate your liability if one of your drivers does commit one. Setting up systems and procedures to reduce the risk of a bridge strike is a platform for reducing the risk of all collisions, their related costs and insurance premiums. It is also good for driver retention.

A copy of David’s presentation can be found here.

Looking forward

David kindly shared details of the free e-learning available from Road Skills Online.

Don’t assume your drivers know how to avoid a bridge strike. Help them to think more about working processes to avoid the worst case scenario with this DVSA Recognised and CPD Standards Office accredited Toolbox Talk from CLOCS delivery partner Road Skills Online.

Anyone keen to take a closer look at this subject or discuss how Road Skills Online might benefit their organisation should contact David directly. His contact details can be found on the final slide of his presentation.

And finally…

Our thanks to David for giving up his time to share his knowledge and insights on this subject with the CLOCS community, and thanks also those who attended sharing their own thoughts and experiences.
