Assessing ground conditions

The CLOCS Standard requires fleet operators to use vehicles with enhanced safety features such as greater direct vision, lower axle heights and side under-run protection.

The CLOCS Standard also requires clients and principal contractors to ensure construction, supply and waste sites are suitable for vehicles fitted with such enhanced safety features.

To support these requirements and encourage the use of safer vehicles, an assessment for on-site ground conditions has been developed to help support clients, contractors and fleet operators in applying this requirement.

The assessment form included in the back of this guide is available to download as a seperate form here.

This guide was developed by those working in the industry and is intended to be used as an internal mechanism for assessing ground conditions which are then communicated to operators servicing the site.

Assessment is based on four key criteria – approach angle, material type, ruttings and bumps and water.

The overall site rating is based on the lowest rated of these four criteria.

Follow the instructions within the assessment for on-site conditions assessment handbook to evaluate your site.

Communicating your findings

It is vital that ground conditions are assessed but unless the results of any assessment are communicated in a robust and regular manner to those fleet operators servicing the project, they will not be able to send the most suitable vehicles, rendering the assessments redundant.
