Refocus on…CLOCS guide
Improving road safety using the planning
process
Launched in March 16, this document explains how planning officers can mitigate the effects of work related road risk (WRRR) associated with a development by introducing the CLOCS Standard into planning conditions. Key sections of the guide are:

1.What CLOCS is & what’s covered in the CLOCS Standard
2.How CLOCS can benefit the local area
3.How CLOCS fits into the planning process
4.Types of development that CLOCS requirements can particularly improve safety on
5.Advice on monitoring and support of CLOCS requirement
Tell us what you think – please e-mail enquiries@CLOCS.org.uk to tell us:
  • Whether you use this guide in your company
  • How useful it is
  • Suggestions to improve it
Championing CLOCS – as a CLOCS Champion, you’ll be actively promoting the implementation of the CLOCS National Standard – so please forward this bulletin to local authorities to recommend their planning policies require compliance to CLOCS National Standard
HS2 hosts CLOCS working group in Birmingham
Hosted by HS2, the CLOCS Working Group met in Birmingham to review recent progress and discuss future developments. The session included:
  • Outline proposals for new Traffic Marshal training
  • How lessons can be learned from collisions or near misses and use of CLOCS Manager
  • The CLOCS site compliance checklist developed by Considerate Constructor’s Scheme
  • Launch of a pilot ground conditions assessment tool & online directory to aid the uptake and use of safer trucks
For more info on the working group contact Derek@secbe.org.uk
Site Compliance Visits – claim your 2 free visits
Clients, contractors and other site operators can now have their sites independently assessed to identify and demonstrate how well they are performing against the CLOCS Standard.  The CLOCS site checklist, developed in partnership with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), assesses compliance against the seven client requirements of the CLOCS Standard.

CLOCS is funding the first 100 visits (max. 2 per contractor) when done alongside a CCS site visit. Please nominate 5 sites (we’ll select 2) by e-mailing details to enquiries@clocs.org.uk

The City of London Corporation's experimental safety scheme, Bank on Safety, went live on Monday 22 May 2017 – meaning that only pedal cyclists and buses will be able to cross Bank Junction, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7am to 7pm. There is a selection of maps on the City of London website showing loading areas, length restrictions and access routes.

For further information contact bankarea@cityoflondon.gov.uk. The experiment will be closely monitored for other UK cities & towns to understand the lessons.
